Did google Ever suffer denial of service?

Hello everyone
Two weeks ago I ran into a programmer who indicated to me that either
late in 2003 or very early 2004, Google suffered a denial of service
attack that was successful in jamming their web page and bringing them
down. Is this true? I've searched publications for any information
related to any such incident happening and am coming up empty. Was he
wrong or can anybody out there corroborate? I figured that the planet
would have noticed if this actually happened.
