Thanks, Chuck. My version doesn't have the -c option (GNU, I assume, Debian
Linux here.)

Like I said, I want to cut gzip and [tng]roff out of the loop...

Tomsrtbt has the man pages in plain text. I'll drop him a note and ask how
he pulled that off.
