I've got an old intel-based laptop (200mhz, 128mb RAM and 4gb HD) that i'd like to install unix on. I like the smallest lightest-weight unix since the machine is on the slow side. I'll only be using it for web browsing and some light word processing. Can anyone offer an opinion as to what would best unix os to run given my expected usage and computer specs? Low-cost or free would be nice. Thanks in advance for any/all comments.
Assuming that your definition of "unix" includes Linux, you should have a look at Damn Small Linux [DSL], at:
<http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/>
Its bootable ("live CD") ISO image is just ~50MB, so it's pretty easy (and free) to download and try. It also has options for customization and hard disk installation. The live CD environment is based on Knoppix, and has excellent automatic hardware detection.
Among other things, it includes:
--A lightweight window manager (Fluxbox)
--Mozilla Firefox and Dillo browsers.
--Sylpheed for E-mail
--Editors and utilities
One of the editors (Ted) has limited word-processing capability. If that's not enough, and DSL is otherwise suitable, it would be fairly simple to download and install AbiWord, a very capable word processor.
