Thanks for responding. My original post should have mentioned I checked
this stuff already. /etc/resolv.conf unchanged since my last game of
musical ISP's, over a year ago. /etc/hosts entry for 'anne' unchanged for
years. Restore of /etc/hosts from March backup (weeks before problem began)
no help.

At someone's suggestion, I've completely unplugged mmdf and replaced it with
smail, which on first impression seems like easier to administer, fewer
moving parts, better logging, plus it doesn't suffer from whatever's become
broken in my environment. (It's explicitly configured to ignore -- other
than a logfile warning -- badly formed hostnames if they originate locally
on my LAN.)
