Hello,
I posted this article in another, less traveled, news group. So if you have
seen this before, thats why.
I am pretty new to Unix so I apologize if this question reflects my
ignorance.
We recently purchased a Dell PowerEdge 2650 server which will hopefully soon
be running SCO UNIX OpenServer R 5.0.5.
When I attempt to install the OS I run into a problem that ultimately
results in a failed installation.
After I select my keyboard type and enter the serial number, the
installation begins to copy files from the installation media and then
stops with the following error.
ERROR:
No root disk has been detected. Cannot proceed. Verify that your hardware
configuration has a disk attached and configured as the primary disk.
Installation will now abort. Press <Enter>
When I press enter, the system reboots.
I have done a few Google searches, searched the adaptec site, and trolled
the Caldera TA knowledgebase. I suspect from information I have read that
the fix is in the bootstring.
Though I am not sure exactly what elements are required in the bootstring,
nor where to find the information needed.
Bootstrings I have tried are:
defbootstr scsi.noscan
defbootstr Sdsk=7899w(0,0,7,0)
defbootstr Sdsk=ad160(0,0,0,0)
defbootstr Sdsk=ad160(0,0,7,0)
defbootstr Sdsk=ad(0,0,0,0) and 0,0,7,0
defbootstr Sdsk=dpti(0,0,0,0) and 0,0,7,0
defbootstr Sdsk=dpti5(0,0,0,0) and 0,0,7,0
If it matters, the SCSI controller is an Adaptec. Printed in the chip is
"adaptec
AIC-7899W
BQEE308
753320
R46852.1S02
KOREA"
I know the information I have provided is a bit vauge. However, if you need
additional information, please let me know and I will be more than happy to
find it and post it. At this point, I am pretty much stuck. Even a push in
the direction of the right information source would be greatly
apprecitated.
In the meantime I will be looking for the appropriate SCSI controller
driver, and looking for information on how to get the installation
to recognize the SCSI disks during installation.
Thanks for your time,
e-
