Oops, I should have paid attention to the subject line as well as the
content. You wanted recommendations for print servers not for printers.
Most companies I know use JetDirects, the only problems I've seen have
been with other makes, but the numbers involved are too small to draw
any conclusions.
Some Windows experts, that I respect, use LPD on Windows servers in
preference to Windows native printing protocols. Most Windows versions
include LPD clients.
The best practise in this group seems to be to use netcat rather than
LPD on *nix.
Therefore I'd buy a print server that supports at least LPD, I'd give
preference to one that also supports direct printing to a TCP port and
native Windows printing. I'd also look out for support for IPP.
Since I'm conservative, I'd buy JetDirect. I'd use eBay if I needed to
save money.
Just my GBP 0.02^H4 worth.
