NeTraverse Merge 5.3.7c and dos +acom1

Hello,

One of our customers is running OSE5.0.7 with MP1 and oss653a on an HP ML370
G3 (if needed I can provide an hw -mv listing).
I installed Merge537c in order to run an older dos program (Phoenix - used
for cardlock polling) that needs to dial out through an external modem
connected on COM1.
I use 'dos +acom1' to start the dos session but when running the program it
won't find the modem (if somebody is familiar with phoenix the error message
is "The modem is not responding to setup commands"). This setup was working
fine for years on a Compaq Proliant800 with OSE504 and Merge4.
I am experiencing this issue on another server loaded with OSE506 and also
Merge537c installed.
I am wondering if there could be any issue with the way Merge5 emulates the
serial port.
I tried Merge4 but it won't create the DOS7.0 video image files ( I get the
VM_DIED error and "Incompatable VGA card") so after reading through this
newsgroup I decided to give a 60-day try to Merge5 in order to accomodate
the new hardware.
I am hoping somebody could shed a light on this issue.
