In article <3fa2bbf1$0$1097$8eec23a@newsreader.tycho.net> spcecdt@deeptht.armory.com (John DuBois) writes:
$RFC2821: "for compatibility with older conforming implementations, SMTP clients
$and servers MUST support the original HELO mechanisms as a fallback."
One or two sentences earlier, RFC2821 also requires all
contemporary SMTP servers, regardless of whether they actually support
any SMTP extensions, to support EHLO. That leaves open the door
for legacy SMTP servers not to support EHLO, but it would be kinda nice
were MMDF to have some ESMTP support. Ah well, not that I really
care; as I find obtuse smtpd's spam-fighting capabilities to be
superior to MMDF's, I always drop obtuse in front (and it doesn't
support ESMTP, either).
Still, 2821's HELO requirement that John quoted above is really just a
statement of what is currently done by well-designed ESMTP clients - and
it's common sense. If, for instance, your requirement is to transmit
8-bit data in a mail message, ESMTP provides one way of doing it, but
it can be done using previous standards that work perfectly well over
SMTP as well, so there's no reason to require ESMTP.
