    The knowledge I have with regards to this you are not going to like.

    The built-in controller of a DL380 G3 (which is a SmartArray 5i
    incidentally, using the 'ciss' driver) can take the hot-pluggable DAT, and
    should work using the most recent EFS (5.60a).

    The documentation is a bit vague with regards to external devices however,
    stating:

    "0 for the first tape drive, 1 for the second and so on..."

    Thus not explicitly listing the ability to use an External device.

    Unfortunately, I haven't had the opportunity to test this yet.
