I dunno...
I've seen some hard to explain problems.
had one recently where a hp4050 or a 6P, one of those medium-small but
reliable hp lasers, was hooked via parallel to a linksys 3-port.
the unix box and some of the pc's were configured to print directly to the
print server via raw tcp
One pc, whenever it tried to print a web page would invariably lock up the
print server. Every single time. It had the right printer driver installed
and it's only problem was it was an older win98 machine but fully up to date
with windows update and drivers.
I "fixed" this machine by sharing the printer from the unix box via
facetwin, and changing the "port" in the printer properties on the pc to
point to the unix share instead of directly to the print server itself.
Didn't even remove or re-install the drivers (I had done that already).
100% reliable since then. It must be the same print data and both
communication channels should have been perfectly fine, yet one way works
and one way locks up the print server.
