Stuart,
please switch to /usr/spool/mail and check for files starting with the
period character (eg, .nameoftheuser). If memory serves (but I'm unable
to check that on a live SCO system now), popper should create a copy of
a given user's mailbox using the "." + "name_of_the_user" scheme.
If something goes wrong during mail retrieval, the "dot" filename
remains around thus preventing popper from servicing other requests.
Another issue might be related to a corrupted mailbox but, from previous
posts, that should not be your case.
