I used Knoppix to rescue a non-bootable XP machine. Boot Knoppix.
Mount the ntfs partition. Fire up the ftp program on Knoppix
and move the files elsewhere. Then I could reinstall the XP, which
would have wiped the diretories that XP could not open but Knoppix
could.

I think everyone should have a Knoppix CD for emergency work.
