I used Knoppix to rescue a non-bootable XP machine. Boot Knoppix.
Mount the ntfs partition. Fire up the ftp program on Knoppix
and move the files elsewhere. Then I could reinstall the XP, which
would have wiped the diretories that XP could not open but Knoppix
could.

I think everyone should have a Knoppix CD for emergency work.

    ... I first repartitioned new disk with qtparted running from Knoppix 3.3 live ... So my new partitions were sda1 ... ... Easy way would be to boot WinXP and just copy data. ...
