And just a comment - that applies to other *n*x variants - while
many will support very long user names - there are many things
which start having problems once you get past 16 character user
names. And the directory displays get very messy when long user
names are there as the field display will be pushed so the columns
line up and you find that the far right column often wraps around.

That is purely cosmetic.

Having adminstered systems with long user names I'd advise against it
if you can avoid it.
