    Hi Rainer,

Thanks for your reply. I'm ordering two new tapes for the old tape
drive at a ridiculous 31 Pounds (4/8 Gb) as we speak. I should get a
cleaning tape as well i guess

    I have two following plan:
because i found an identical machine with all the same hardware. I
should be able to mount the two tape drivers (original and newly found)
in one machine and boot using a linux flop/cd (incl scsi drivers) and
copy the tape track by track using dd. Whereby i put the original
installation tape(s) into the original drive. This tape drive has been
used over the years and is known to be good. Once i have the new tape i
can install the identical machine with the new tape. I also need to
copy the installation froppies but that shouldn't be a problem.

I don't see any errors in this method and would test the new tapes in
the new tape drive whereby the old tape should not get ruined. Fool
prove method i hope. Once i have the new tape i can refamilirise myself
with this old version without touching or changing the old production
system. The old system is running 24/7 so shouldn't be touched. At a
later stage the identical machine can be kept as a backup machine.

I can use the identical machine to figure out how to create a bare
metal backup (I know this is not windows, i despise windows in so many
ways and i always have/will). It;s just a bit old and not very friendly
to me at the moment (having used linux for to long i guess).

Once i'm done i will post my findings of course.

    Any comments ?

    Diederik
