I recently wrote a shell script to perform a database query on our SCO
5.0.6 system and squirt some data out to an IP address on a port where
a PC running a VB windows application is listening. I'm then using
the data to modify parameters of a machine in a factory based on the
new information from the database - in this case when the species of
the input lumber changes I alter the modulus of elasticity cut off for
structural grades of lumber.
I have thought it would be useful for the windows application to send
a "hold_the_bus" message back to SCO box when the production line is
stopped due to mechanical issues, lunch break etc. The SCO box then
would not have to run the database query to check for updated
information until a "go_for_it" message is received from the windows
app on the production line.
It seems netcat can send but not receive, there is another netcat "nc"
which looks promising. What is recommended?
