Certainly USENET news is better handled with a newsreader, however
you must have your reasons for choosing otherwise.

Isn't that something you should take up with your gateway operator?
Meanwhile, an appropriate entry in your .maildelivery file such as:
From kathrynb@oreilly.com destroy A -
should prevent all interesting O'Reilly book announcements from ever
annoying you again, while leaving them available for people who want
them.
