Well, this sounds right. Only I'll be doing this over the internet. What should I use for the ip number in the /etc/hosts file? It will be different every time (dynamic ip) and so will be the server.

TIA

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ wait a sec.....the Unix server has a different ip every time? you mean both machines are on dialup? and if that's the case, how do you know what ip number to telnet to in the first place?

in any case, as long as you know the ip to telnet to, my previous
message still stands. I mean, if you already KNOW what number to
telnet to, then it's a moot point.

The Unix server is connected to the Internet and has a dynamic ip. I already set it up with ipupdater.com and can find it with xxxx.ipupdater.com.
However, the terminals they want to substitute with a PC has been working thru a serial modem connection and the server line has a serial modem connected to an equinox SST controller/multiport.
I have tried entering the 'xxx.ipupdater.com host' info in the /etc/hosts file, but that didn't work for some reason.
I guess I'll have them connecting the PC thru the serial modem and a terminal emulator, and forget telnet for now.

Thanks again.

yikes...i'm sorry....i thought your pc was connected to the internet
thru a dialup connection or something...i didn't understand the whole
situation. unless you can get the multiport device set to catch
certain incoming ports and then send to a specific client machine,
then you'll never have a print job coming back down the line being
able to find the correct machine. and then you would need the
multiport device to update it's ip to some service, and i'm not sure
it can do that.

Usually if a client wants to upgrade to pcs instead of dumb terminals,
they would want to upgrade to a more efficient and elegant way of
connecting to the 'net

and that would be ?
Remember, we are not looking to connect to the net. We are doing that now. What we are trying to accomplish is a SCO Openserver/W2K client setup with a slave printer thru telnet maybe. And the slave printer IS the big problem. This is a dispatch app where the operator enters the ticket info and upon completion, prints a ticket in real time.

(at least here in the U.S.; i'm not sure of
your location or the local circumstances).

Good luck; hope you can solve their problem.

Well, we are in the U.S. (Miami, anyway). The client has DSL service on both locations. The current configuration has both machines communicating thru dial up lines directly, not using the Internet. It is an antique setup, but it works.
The customer asked if it was possible to use a PC instead of the dumb terminal, since they already have both and wanted to save space.

Thanks again for your help,
