I have been getting the following backup failure message on occasion.
I have used cleaning tapes regularly.
I have tried swapping out tapes.
Sometimes occurs even after I do a complete restart.
I have some knowledge of Unix but would appreciate any help.

Could I be running into storage limitation of the DDS1 tape?
Would it show up as this error?

Beginning Save From /etc/edge.nightly - Fri Oct 13 23:00:47 CDT 2006
Error In Save - Error Code Is 4
edge: Tape Write ERROR 6 occurred because...No such device or address
Backup NOT Complete - Sat Oct 14 01:35:14 CDT 2006
Total DATA: 1.787Gb (Gigabytes)
Actual Tape Data Written: 1.844Gb (Gigabytes)
ROOM LEFT on this Volume: 17.84Mb (Megabytes)

Data Transfer Speed: 182759 bytes/sec ( 10.5 Mb/min)
DDS1 Wangdat 3200

Boy - that is a really old unit.
It just might be reaching it's end of life.

Taking 3 hours to write that little data
really puts a lot of wear on the device.

180KB/s is not bad for DDS1!

http://www.supertechnologies.com/wangdat3200_specs.htm
-> 22 MB/min backup speed - typical
eq. 366KByte/s

divide by 2 (3200 can do compression) = 180KB/s

So that's the maximum speed the 3200 can do!
Great, isn't it?

My personal feeling was that things only started getting really
realiable with the DDS-3 machines. The faster the backup the less
total hours consumed - and the longer the drive will last.

Maybe the OSR is not able to deliver the data fast enough?
Too: are DDS-3 available as HVD-SCSI or only as LVD?

I would first try to enable drives hardware compression:

Now going back to my notebock with 2MB CPU built-in cache and 2GB RAM ;-)
Boy, as time goes by...

BTW:
Will OSR5.06 meanwhile run under vmware?
Is there a p2v tool to convert a HFS drive?
