replacing system with new hardware

I've inherited a 7yr old 5.0.6 system. It's in Intel server with a Mylex 3000 SCSI controller. This controller is no longer made.

I want to duplicate this system on a newer platform. I use Lone-Tar for backup.

What is the best way to convert to a newer/different RAID controller? Load a new OS, restore everything but /stand and /unix and then reconfigure the odd device that doesn't work?

.
