Thank you for the pointer. That says it exists on the 5.0.7
installation media' It doesn't say what it's actually called when you
look at the media, although I'll take a look on my 5.0.6 installation
media: "These tools are part of the native OpenServer Development
System or the SCO OpenServerLinkerand Application Development
Libraries." It doesn't give a precise package name for the 'custom'
command to find it, especially with older distributions.
On the older OpenServer distributions, the package on the installation
media is called something like headers and libraries.

Many companies that have made themselves dependent on [the equipment of a
certain major manufacturer] (and in doing so have sold their soul to the
devil) will collapse under the sheer weight of the unmastered complexity of
their data processing systems.

This is not enough on 5.0.6. You need to install the full 'SCO
OpenServer Development System' in order to get /usr/bin/ar. It doesn't
need a license, but it does also need the rs506a and oss646c updates
installed or re-installed *after* the installation of this bundle so
that everything works correctly.
I'm not sure how SCO feels about developers installing the Development
System, without a license purchased, in order to run gcc. But given
the incompatibility of their compiler and build system with many
opensource projects, using their compiler is actually detrimental to
development.
