Have you used this successfully with OpenServer 5.0.x? Does it
transfer boot loaders appropriately? Because migrating to new hardware
usually also means new or re-arranged drivers, and from my Linux and
UNIX experience, that makes switching to new harder potentially quite,
quite awkward.
That question borders on the offensive.
Of course he has, and so have I and so have tons of other people for years and years.
It is not merely an ok suggestion, it is THE reference procedure and for good reason.
That's why he made the suggestion and why all the other people who actually have in depth and long time experience with both this OS and exactly the very very very typical, common, ordinary situation the OP is in, did not contradict, correct, or even improve upon the suggestion.
CTAR, Lone-Tar, and BackupEdge are all products that have been around for ages and their main expertise is doing exactly that, and specifically on this platform. They've been doing it so long that ctar is actually discontinued since several years ago. Lone-Tar and BackupEdge are both still currently developed and producing new features and abilities. Meanwhile their ability to successfully do this kind of migration is greatly enabled by the fact that the OS is far more static and universal than linux. Everyones OSR 5.0.7 is the same as everyone elses, and 5.0.7 is not that different from 5.0.6, 5.0.5 etc... right on back to xenix. There are differences of course but the number of possible differences are vanishingly smaller, and most of those adhere to some sort of rule that can be counted on, so for those places where the util has to do some dynamic examination, it actually can do so reliably.
There is someone in this thread who makes suggestions without knowing if they work or how well or in all cases or if they are practical or wise in contex etc.. but it's not JPR.
