I use a SCO Openserver 6 server for my medical practice. The supplier
of our Medical Management software sold us a new server, configured
with OS 6 enterprise, patched with MP3. Unfortunately, he did not
install the Graphics option of the base OS before applying MP3. I
would like to have access to the GUI for system management,
downloading patches, etc. Reading the release notes for MP3, it
states that MP3 cannot be removed. It also says that if you install
an option after MP3, run the MP3 install again to get all the
updates. So, I used scoadmin software to selectively install the
Graphics subset of the operating system. That appeared to work.
Then, I tried to apply the MP3 pack again and got a list of parts that
were already installed, parts that would not be installed because
their base was not present (the development kit and foreign languages)
and the parts that would be installed (X11 Standard and Extended
clients). I tried to proceed with the install, but it gave an error
message that an uninstall must be done first. I tried installing only
the X11 Standard and Extended Clients and got the same error message.
There is no GUI running on tty02. I can run the video configuration
manager, but on startup it complains that there are mismatched modules
as follows:
module ABI major version (1) doesn't match the server's version (0)
module ABI major version (1) doesn't match the server's version (0)
module ABI major version (1) doesn't match the server's version (0)
module ABI minor version (3) is newer than the server's version (2)
Similarly scologin cannot be enabled and startx produces a whole slew
of module version mismatch errors.
Can this mess be fixed, and if so, how? Thanks.

Have you tried the simple stuff, such as using Custom | Software |
Verify System (thorough)? That may fix some of this.
Although you can't uninstall MP3, I'm not sure whether you can
uninstall individual packages. You might try selecting one (such as
X11) and trying to uninstall, then reinstall.
Are you absolutely positive the mouse is working? That has been the
cause of most GUI launch failures on SCO in my experience.
Good luck,
Mark
