This is an old 5.0.5 enterprise server. Once a day the server
"hangs."(usually in the morning, sometimes it's hung when they first
get in, sometimes it happens during the day while they are working),
When it's "hung", any new login attempts just give a blinking cursor
after entering the username and password. This is true of both telnet
and console sessions. (this is not a delayed login issue - it really
hangs.) I have discovered that if I have a console session logged in
when the "hang" occurs, it stays alive (I can execute commands, etc).
But it won't allow another login on either the console or via telnet.
While in the "hung" state, I can ping the server from the workstations
and vica-versa. If I try to do a shutdown from the active console
session, it starts and then hangs at "8270;hangup." Only solution is
hit the power button and then it comes back up fine (for a day).
reading through various support threads, I have tried a host of
things, including: disabled anything running in crontabs and ran full
system checks, I verified the /etc/hosts file is correct and even
tried entering the IP of one of the workstations. no help (don't think
it's network-related anyway). I cleaned up the hard disks so there is
minimum of 30% free on all filesystems.
Don't know what else to try.
They are stuck with this server for now, as they would have to incur a
large software expense to move to Linux, which they just can't afford
for now.
Any suggestions?
It would be interesting to run 'ps -ft <hung terminal>' from a good
terminal ...
Perhaps grab lsof for sco and run it on those processes.
Or run 'ps -ef > file.out' both during good and bad times, and compare
the two listings.
