Note that it makes sense to get the development versions of zsh.
They are quite stable and bring many features (and bug fixes).
Development for 4.0 (3.1 series) lasted several years. Many
Linux distributions, for instance, in the end, were providing
packages for the 3.1.x versions, as they were much useful, much
much more than the 3.0.x ones. If you've stuck with 3.0.x until
4.0.1 was out, you missed the 4.0 (3.1) jewels for several years
(3.1 development started in Oct 1996, 4.0 was out in Jun 2001
(so 4.1 also started in Jun 2001)).
