Ah. I have this bookmarked for such purposes regarding finding
GNU/Linux tools for the job. Can you suggest a better usenet group that

In terms of a single convienient URL, http://directory.fsf.org would
probably be a prime candidate. Much better though to do some proper
reseach - find an appropriate newsgroup for each particular application
and see what people there recommend etc. The general sites such
as the FSF/UNESCO Free Software Directory given above can't really give
advice on the comparative merits of applications within a category.
