Ah. I have this bookmarked for such purposes regarding finding
GNU/Linux tools for the job. Can you suggest a better usenet group that

I'd suggest you look at http://www.sane-project.org to
begin with - there is a scanimage utility listed there which may well
do what you want.

Thanks. I found it was part of ImageMagick and was installed on my
GNU/Linux (Ubuntu) system as 'scanimage'. I checked the man page and it
looks like just the ticket. I can interface with it via shell out
commands from within PHP. Thanks! :)
