check the man page for ifconfig. There's a "plumb" command which turns
on the interface. If you really doubt the function of the interface,
try shutting down to the OBP. Then at the prompt, type

watch net

You should see dots which represent traffic from the active port. This
will tell you the port is working. While it's doing this command, pull
the network cable and watch the dots stop. Plug it back in and watch
them continue.

To configure an IP address for the interface, boot the box single-user
and create the file /etc/hostname.eri0. Put the IP address for the
interface in the file. Exit single-user and you should be up and
running. If not try using snoop to see what sort of traffic you see.
