If you can't get that to work, you might try an old trick.
Partition disk, then install a minimal Solaris image entirely in the
swap slice.
Boot from swap slice, newfs the other slices and do your restore. I'm
worried that if the CD doesn't see the tape drive that the default
Solaris install won't either.
What type of drive is it?
