What's wrong with that? Presumably your boss pays you because of
your technical expertise. It's your job to make recommandations
and be able to defend them. And (to be blunt), if you can't, then
you're not the right person for the job...

If you're going to go that route, I'd recommend Postgres over
MySQL.

I see your point, but I would argue that a knowledgable and
confident admin should be able to argue against management's
opinions. At the end of the day, unless they've delegated
purchasing authority, it's their call what gets used. But
it's your job to ensure that they have the right info, so
they can make an informed decision.
I mean, if "popularity" had anything to do with it, why not
just recommend Windoze, and be done with it?
Oh, and put your recommendations (with rationale) in writing
(an email will do). That way, if they decide to ignore you,
and later try to blame you, you have evidence to the contrary.
