The most noisy parts in my two reconditioned U30:s were the hard drive,
you should really replace those awful 4 or 9GB screamers with say a
recent silent 36 or 18 Gigger.
Also get either the noice reduction kit, which makes a difference
in my machine of slowing down the fans, or disconnect the front
fan altogheter. (In one of my machines this fan was very noisy
and faulty, reconditioned direct from Sun).
Make sure its not clogged with dust.
I haven't noticed any ill-effects so far.

Any Sun reseller should be able to get one for you!?
Sun Order PN: #530-2867.
Cost £25-30??

The U10 use a really nasty and noisy fan. A grinding noise. I think it is
worse in some sepects than a U30, not to mention the general flimsiness of
that machine. Just compare the power cords coming out of the power supply.

Vacuum the machine, switch hdd, and disconnect the front fan should
make a decent start.

I'm thinking of getting two Sunrays and putting my machine away, but I'm not
there yet.
