Brian,

Thanks for the clear reply

> Did the software install correctly? Exactly what software was installed?

The software was our own financial software which installs using a
script. In order to install this oftware the user had to clear some
free space on the machine the user assures me they only deleted
non-system files i.e. ones in the financials product, although I am
not sure of this. I do know that the user was logged on as root when
doing the install.

I was attempting to login as root on the grpahical screen, but as
below the screen went black then flashed back to the login screen. I
selected the command line login from the session menu and the screen
went to the white prompt screen and I could login as root and see all
the file system.

This is on a Solaris 5.7 server and I noticed that there is no Bin
directory on the root of this server yet on our Solaris 5.8 server and
a Solaris 5.6 server they both have a bin directory under the root
"/". Is it possible the user has deleted this dir? or is it just a
version difference.

> Again, is this as root and/or normal users?
When I was attempting to login it was as root, as I wasn't sure of the
others users passwords on this machine.

I see what you are pointing at, both telnet and the graphical login
rely on using a shell and if this is damaged or incorrect in some way
the login will fail. With the info you have given it has made me
think that the shell script that was used to install the software may
have changed roots shell in some way as part of the install and set
something incorrectly. I think I need to add another user or reset
the password of another user and attempt to login as them. If that
works then I need to sort out root's enviroment/shell.

If you have any further pointers from this extra info then it would be
appreciated.

Thanks
Martin
