You can use NTP throughout. IMO there is no reason not to use NTP. You
just disable the Windows Time Service and install the NTP from
http://norloff.org/ntp/ or http://www.five-ten-sg.com [at bottom left]
(see also www.ntp.org), make sure port 123 is allowed through your
firewall (and through XP's own, if any of those are added with ICF
[Internet Connection Firewall] enabled), and away it goes. The "NT"
version works on NT4, 2000 and XP. Ideally you want the Solaris machines
as the "servers" and the Windows machines as the "clients", as Solaris
is slightly better than Windows at time keeping, though we are talking
milli-seconds, not gross problems. One of the advantages of using NTP
across the patch is that you can monitor the time sync on all the
machines easily from one point.
