That would be more "traditional", yes. But it doesn't really
matter, as long as *you* know where everything is.

LANG=C will be fine for most US applications, you did fine. Locale
(see locale(1) and /etc/default/init) just lets you define things
like what language/character set is used for system error messages,
what the sort order of characters is, what the default format of
date/time is, etc.

Not a mistake, that's what you want.

You've checked out the Sun Handbook site, right?
http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/U5/U5.html
The CPU is fine. You're probably short on RAM, but it can't hurt to
try and get away w/it. Your box has 4 DIMM slots, populated 2 banks
of 2. Unless you're *really* lucky you're fully stuffed with 64MB
DIMMS and you'll have to discard them to got to 512MB, which would
cost you $250-300 (new 3rd-party or used Sun).
Don't know what an Oracle install runs disk-wise, but not to worry.
Unlike the RAM, disk is cheap, any normal 7200rpm IDE drive up to
80GB will work with no problems. You can even drop in a second
IDE drive and play with SVM if you take out the floppy drive.

Another poster has covered disabling Xsun, but you can also pull the
video and keyboard completely, and the box will autoset the console
to the serial port (9600 8N1). You can use Hyperterminal for
an RS232 console device then. Watch out for KEYBOARD_ABORT in
/etc/default/kbd, and check out Celeste Stokely's Sun serial site:

X-Win32 is good, I prefer it to Hummingbird Exceed, personally.
You might also try VNC, which gives you X11 plus disconnect/reconnect,
plus remote sessions the *other* way.
Have fun!
