Use cdparanoia to rip the cd's into .wav files, one per track. Then
use bladeenc (or others) to compress the .wav's to .mp3 files. You
can adjust the bitrate for quality, etc.. Different mp3 encoders
introduce different noise (and they all introduce noise), so it might
be worth trying to find one that sounds good to you. Although I don't
use such features, some mp3 ripper/encoders can automatically name the
the tracks for you. bladeenc compiles readily on Solaris, and I think
cdparanoia was developed on it.
I like buying books on tape, then "ripping" the tapes to wav files,
then encoding to 64kbit mono mp3 files- you can put a ~20 tape book
onto one cd & play it back on a laptop/ipod/whatever.
Apparently "Ogg Vorbis" is a open standard with at least reference
encoder & player software available, but I've never tried it.
