cannot access cdrom drive at boot

I'm trying to do a fresh install on an Ultra 5. I don't have the root
password to the box, so it's pretty much a doorstop unless I can get the
cdrom (or the floppy) to boot.

The cdrom is an IDE drive, installed as master on the second ide port.

I type

probe-ide

from the ok prompt, and I can see the hard drive on Device 0, but no
other devices are present.

when I type

boot cdrom

from the ok prompt, the machine will reboot, and I will eventually see
"Can't open boot device". The activity light on the cdrom drive does not
light up.

This seems to indicate to me that I've got a bad cdrom drive, but maybe
there's something that I've missed. Is there a way of forcing the
machine to recognize the cdrom drive in OpenBoot?

Thanks,
