You guys seem to forget Sun Is a business. As a business, they have to
have marketing and have to protect the interests of their customers and
investors. As such, in order for Sun to release the source code to
Solaris 10, they needed the licensing to own the sourcecode.
Sun Microsystems, as a company, just as most major companies today,
probably have a ISO 9001-2000 quality system in place. Part of this
quality system covers that you must improve your company. Part of
improvement is marketing. Part of marketing is expanding your business,
so to expand you need to plan. Part of that plan is to scope out who
your competitor are and how your going to capture more of that business.
This is why Sun says their competing with Red Hat. Linux is not a
company, and no quality system in place. You can't compete against that.
They are not going to bed with Microsoft, they are executing their
expanding marketing position by taking care of obstacles in it's way.
Also, if I'm not mistaken, that billion-dollar deal was the settlement
of the "Java" licensing law suit from 5 years ago. During the closing
of the law suit, they decided it would be better to be cooperating
competitors.
