While recently interviewing, the question was asked (test or trick
question), What commands are used to add a new disk to a Solaris system
without rebooting. (and I would presume that would also imply - not changing
system state.-
The process to add a filesystem to a partitioned drive is relatively
straightforward, and the process to partition a drive is also functionality
simple, but the process of adding a drive to a running system escapes me.
The usual process of setting the scsi id pinouts on the drive and slipping
the drive into a D-1000 (or A-1000) and the "boot -- -r " (or touch
reconfigure) seems to do the job well.
drvconfig (1M) will build out the symbolic links in /dev/rdsk properly if
and only if the system can see the drive. Is there a method for alerting the
system that there is a new device on the controller chain N, that should be
added to the currently known device list?
(or help me figure out the right way to state the question.)
