Pax in Solaris 9 is not POSIX.1-2001 compliant so it does not support
transcoding.
Unless you use a pax that implements a recelty added optional POSIX feature,
you definitely cannot use pax for backup purposes.
Use star -copy. Except for the fact that Sun's pax already supports
the not really used extended attributes from Solaris, star is better in any
case.
