A couple of years ago I set up a Solaris 9 box and put VNC on it.
Originally, whenever I started an xterm within VNC I'd get the following
message:
xterm: unable to open font "-dt-interface
user-medium-r-normal-m*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*", trying "fixed"....
So I did some research and determined that I needed to be running a font
server on port 7100. Got that set up and VNC could find its fonts and
life was good. Then, a month or two ago there was a power outage and
ever since I brought the box back up it's back to the old behavior. This
time I don't know what to do because all the settings appear to still be
correct and yet no font server:
% pgrep -l fs
3 fsflush
353 nfsd
My next plan is to remove and reinstall the package containing the font
server which appears to be SUNWxwfs:
% pkgchk -l -p /usr/openwin/bin/xfs
Pathname: /usr/openwin/bin/xfs
Type: regular file
Expected mode: 0755
Expected owner: root
Expected group: bin
Expected file size (bytes): 233460
Expected sum(1) of contents: 540
Expected last modification: Dec 04 17:26:03 2002
Referenced by the following packages:
SUNWxwfs
Current status: installed
on the assumption that some file was damaged. Unfortunately I don't know
how to do this. I found a directory called SUNWXWFS on the Solaris
2-of-2 CD but pkgadd doesn't seem to think it contains a package. So I
guess I have two questions:
1. How do I manually pkgadd a package from the Solaris CD set.
2. Any other ideas on how to fix the font server?
