Yeah, when I downloaded it a few days ago, I noticed it was 4
CDs, and each was about 500 MB. This seems pretty comparable
to the size of a download for some Linux install images.

Would you pay $120 for them? That's the price that's listed for
"1 Year Additional Media -- Pull Delivery". According to how I
understand the plan, you pay $120, and then at any point for
one year, you can go to the web site and request physical media
related to Solaris 10 (including OS install CDs but also CDs with
patches on them) and they will be sent to you.
However, I do admit that that web page that describes this at
http://store.sun.com/ is a bit unclear. I'm not sure if I have to
also order the Basic Service Plan (for another $120) to be able
to sign up for the Additional Media thing.
If you're actually interested in getting a copy of the download and
really can't download 4 CD images, you could call 1-800-SUN-0404 in
the US and ask them what the cheapest way is to get install media.
Although if it is $240, it is probably cheaper just to order
high-speed internet service at home and download it. :-)

It might be unwise to consider transitioning to any operating system
you don't have a lot of professional experience with. That is unless
it's a very gradual transition.

Yes, I agree that Sun's marketing department comes up with some
dumb names sometimes. Not that I think other marketing departments
don't do the same thing.
For isntance, 3.1 -> 95 -> 98 -> ME -> 2000 -> XP -> Server 2003
is hardly any more logical than the Java naming sequence.
Unfortunately, marketing people don't like consistent naming
schemes because they get tired of the old names and want to
switch to something different after like a year or two.

Then it may well be no big deal to get it to run. If it doesn't,
then perhaps someone who is interested in using it can contribute
a patch. That's how open source software often works. Developers
don't usually have access to every single platform that their
software can run on.
