Thanks for the suggestions. I get the same results from the OBP prompt
(CD tray keeps ejecting after only a few seconds of being in, regardless
of whether there's a CD in the tray or not). I even tried it with the
Solaris 9 install disc that I just installed with last week.

When I unplug the SCSI cable, the button on the drive doesn't do anything
at all. Pushing the tray in slightly by hand will cause it to retract
by itself & stay in, but without a functional button, there's no way
to eject it again. Re-attaching the SCSI cable resumes its always-open
behavior.

It sounds to me like the drive is dead. I'm glad it waited until just
after we upgraded the OS & the app it runs. I left the CD drive
unplugged. We should be able to get by without a drive on that machine
until its replacement comes available early next year.
