Hi,

yes I'm using a static IP rather than DHCP, interestingly enough I saw the
same results with DHCP as with a static IP

the self healing theory sounds about right, I'll force the NIC and see if
that makes a difference

one other thing I noticed the dmesg showed 3 attempts to start sendmail
before giving up the ghost don't know if this is relates
