In Indiana, our state legislature voted to put us on DST starting next
spring. That's Eastern DST, so we'll be on the same time as Maine year
around (not that I have anything against Maine). The idea was that the
counties could decide whether to stay in the Eastern time zone or move
to Central time -- they could switch to Central as long as they were
adjacent to another Central time county. The argument for going to DST
was so businesses could make more money. Apparently people can't
figure out what time it is in Indiana.

It turns out that in the US, the DOT sets the time zones, and they just
killed the chances of switching for most counties, despite the fact
that at one time virtually all of Indiana was once on Central time
(back in the '50's and '60's, anyway). Now it sounds like the
legislature might vote to roll things back to no DST, since people
can't get the time zone change that they want. I'm certain that the
legislators have been getting earfuls of complaints from the citizens.
They'll probably have to override the governor's veto on this.

Oh, and yes, the metric system makes so much more sense that English
measurements. It's like when you make the switch from working with
degrees to radians -- the calculations get so much easier you wonder
why you ever bothered with degrees.
