I like the idea of filesystem snapshots but if you don't have the disk
space, that won't work.

If box C is in single-user mode, it will have to have the network up and
running in order to connect to either machine that has a tape drive. I
forget what component needs to be running to connect out (rexec)? If
you're going to use ufsdump, you won't be able to mount the drive with
NFS as ufsdump won't back it up. It only backs up local drives, IIRC.

Just as an aside, how were you going to restore box C if it dies? You
can't do remote restores, AFAIK. You'll need to move a tape drive to
box C to restore the filesystems on it. You'll also need a listing of
the disk layout and volume manager configuration along with the Solaris
Install CD.

I'm sure Jurgen will chime in here with "you can use star". He sure
like showing pictures of his kid. But, unless you burn your own custom
Solaris install CD with star on it, you won't be able to restore using
it.

Remote backups are fine for backing up and restoring user data but you
need a local drive for disaster recovery. If that's a the goal of your
backup scheme, why not?
