Cheapest rack-mount server I can see at Dell is $779. They
have tower servers for cheaper, but that's not comparing apples
to apples[1].

The $779 Dell[2] is a 2.53 GHz Celeron D with 256K L2 cache.
The $745 Sun[3] is a 2 GHz Opteron with 1MB L2 cache.

Both have 512MB memory and dual gigabit ethernet.
Both come with a 3-year, next business day parts warranty.

On the plus side for Dell, the Dell comes with an 80GB SATA
drive. The Sun has no drive and an 80GB SATA drive is $150
extra.

On the plus side for Sun, $745 is the regular list price of
the Sun server. The Dell's regular list price is $1039, and
the $260 instant savings is a "limited time offer".

All in all, the pricing is very similar between the two, but
I would expect the Sun's 2 GHz Opteron 146 to beat the living
snot out of the Dell's 2.53 GHz Celeron D 326. Intel's web
site says that the Celeron D delivers "exceptional value for
desktop PCs"[4], whereas the Opteron is clearly a server
processor.

Given that the prices are quite comparable, which one do you
want in your server: a budget desktop processor, or a real
server chip?

[1] Naturally, some people may not care about rack mount
servers, and they may go for a tower server. But
1U rack mount servers are an important market.
