DHCP client does not get a default route

I have an Ultra 80 which I recently configured as a DHCP server. When doing this, I selected that clients should use the "router discovery method" to get the address of the router. The U80 is *not* the router.
I stuck an SS20 (configured as a DHCP client) on the network. The SS20 gets a hostname, domain name, IP address and the addresses of the DNS servers. But the SS20 (DHCP client) fails to get an address of the default route.
% netstat -rn
Routing Table: IPv4 Destination Gateway Flags Ref Use Interface -------------------- -------------------- ----- ----- ------ --------- 192.168.0.0 192.168.0.209 U 1 4 le0 224.0.0.0 192.168.0.209 U 1 0 le0 127.0.0.1 127.0.0.1 UH 1 44 lo0
Is the router (which is not configured to use DHCP) supposed to supply its IP address to the DHCP clients, or is the Ultra 80 (the DHCP server) supposed to supply the address of the router? I assume it is the U80, in which case something is not working as I expected. Any ideas how I might discover where the problem lies?
If the router is supposed to supply the address, then I might be stuck, as there is no obvious way to set it to do this. I guess it might be different if I set the router as a DHCP server, but I don't wish to do that. If necessary, I'll configure the U80 to supply a fixed address for the router.
I don't exactly how the router's IP address should be conveyed to the DHCP client.
