Re: Java Enterprise System licensing ?

I'm no longer a Sun employee, so this isn't "official", but yes the
Java Enterprise System if now "free". As in you can download it and use
it for free. Regardless of dev/test/production, personal/commercial
use.

Yes, it's a little confusing because if you scroll down the page past
the point that it says that JavaES is free, it also says that it's
$140/employee. That's because Sun charges $140/employee /year for
support and services.

Yes, the messaging has been confusing. Yes, the constant branding
changes are insane. I had conversation that went a little like this
recently:

"Do you use Sun's web server?"

"No, we use Netscape"

"Same thing. Netscape Enterprise Server is now Sun Java System Web
Server".

"I thought they were calling it iPlanet. Although my box says
'Sun/Netscape Alliance'"

"They did. That's a couple of versions ago."

"But the logo says "Sun ONE"."

"That's the same too."

"Isn't it Solaris Enterprise System?"

"Maybe. Marketing has started use that term, but I'm not sure if the
products are going to be renamed or not."

Absolutely insane.
