I managed to get a listing back by telling my ftp client to use Passive mode.

Cheers. That is useful to know. It seems to be working in passive mode, but not active.

But I have just used the same Solaris 10 ftp client and connected to the HP C3600's ftp server. That works in both passive *and* active mode.

Are you sure that the HP machine is really running in active mode, or is
it possible that it just defaults to passive mode so that the command to
put it into passive mode is really a no-op?

I'm not saying that's definitely the case, but it would be the simplest
explanation of what you're seeing.

No, I can't be sure about the HP ftp server, but I tried both with and without the "passive" command from Sun's ftp client and find it works with the HP server in either case.

It seems to make no difference, leading me to believe that the it was working in both modes, but that may be incorrect. I'm not sure the best way to know what it is doing - the -v option on the client did not reveal anything useful.

I thought the client, not the server was supposed to set active or passive. (Obviously the server is got to be able to support whatever the client sets).

Whilst there is an /etc/ftpd directory on the HP, there is no /etc/ftpd/ftpaccess file. I am tempted to try the Sun without one - perhaps the defaults are more "friendly" than what sun have put in the file. I really don't know much about ftp servers. I don't normally use ftp, but for once I need it. I normally use ssh.
