problem writing dvd

I've used happily used cdrecord to record CDROMs under linux for some
time now, and recently decided to add optical disc writing capability to
an old Ultra 10 running solaris. I purchased an HP dvd 740 (IDE) for the
purpose, intending to create a DVD of snv-b36. I borrowed a blank DVD-R,
and soon found that I couldn't use the bundled version of "cdrecord" for
DVDs. (See output below). Got Jorg's cdrecord-prodvd and am having
problems. I'd appreciate any insight as to whether the problems I'm
experiencing in trying to do this are hardware, media, software, or
operator related issues.

I know that the download, decompression and concatenation of segments to
form the ISO image are NOT factors. (I've done a live upgrade from the
lofi mounted image). What happens is that cdrecord bails one second into
its 9 second countdown with an saying "Alarm Clock". After the failure
I tried to get a toc, an got a different error, but thought in case the
problem is media related that it might be helpful to include that output
as well. Finally, I got a toc for a CDROM, and that seemed to work fine.

My guess is that when I first tried to write using the wrong version of
cdrecord I may have trashed the (only) DVD I have now. Would like to
sort this out before buying more. Thanks. Particulars below.
