Auto-negotiation works well with current Sun and Cisco hardware. It was
problematic with some older hardware.

For example, the original Catalyst 5000 switch cards did not support
auto-negotiation. Later models did support auto-negotiation. When you
migrate to newer switch hardware, it is easiest to keep the port
settings the same.

I have also seen issues with certain older Sun hardware not
re-negotiating if the cable is unplugged or if the switch is rebooted.
The computer will happily keep running in full-duplex mode while the
switch defaults to half-duplex because it didn't see the negotiation
process. (We still get bit by this one about every six months or so.)


We have observed the same a few years ago: a power-cycle of a network
switch caused a disaster: we had to reboot hundreds of Ultra-5
workstations, they have got fixed settings since.

Was it really the hardware or the Solaris NIC driver?
